“Doodee Devil” - Doodee

Well known in the community as a reliable joint to get your hands onto authentic Thai noodles - you know you can count of Doodee to blow your brains out when it comes to heat.

Doodee Devil is a bowl of Tom Yum soup, your choice of noodles and an assortment of fishballs and pork cuts. Contrary to the dishes’ pseudonym, Doodee Devil is not the spiciest level of heat this dish comes in, ranking at a measly level 2 out of a potential 7.

The first spoonful of this devilish broth will send your tastebuds into a state of oblivion. Acute floral flavours of various chillies juxtaposed against an unmissable sourness, results in a culinary big bang; quintessential of a traditional Tom Yum.

As you venture deeper into the broth, intermittent and scattered roasted peanuts appear, releasing a creamy and smokey flavour - symbolic of debris following the initial explosion. The added depth and richness from the peanuts introduces a firm textural element to this dish and provides pleasant reprieve from the escalating heat.

The pork and fishballs are as expected and noodles cooked satisfactorily.

Personally, this dish taunts the fine line between the utilisation of chilli for flavour and heat, versus merely as a vessel for heat. For the first half of the meal the flavours were well balanced and congruent, however, the abundance of chilli flakes ended up demanding absolute attention of my tastebuds, a pity for the rest of the dish*.

Overall, you can be sure to prescribe this dish to whoever: requires improved blood circulation, needs further inflation of their ego or is in need of an authentic slice of Thailand.

*…or perhaps the devil was too spicy for me 😈
